THEORY

___Theory of Power: Pick a technique and explain the six elements within the technique

The History of: General Choi Hong Hi

Was Born (November 9th 1918, Hwa Dae, Myong Chun District (D.P.R of Korea)) a

frail, weak child. Despite his frail exterior Choi had a strong independent spirit.

Choi was expelled from school at the age of 12 for speaking out against the Japanese

authority. Choi’s father sent him to study calligraphy under Mr. Han II Dong, in

Korea, who was also a Master of Taek Kyon (Ancient Korean art of foot fighting).

Han began teaching Taek Kyon to Choi which he believed would benefit Choi’s frail

body.

In 1937, Choi went to Japan to further his education. Choi began training in the art

of Karate achieving the rank of first degree black belt after two years of vigorous

training. It was this knowledge and training of Karate and Taek Kyon that would

serve as the back bone to the modern art of Taekwon-Do. WWII broke out and Choi

was forced to enlist in the Japanese army. During Choi’s post in North Korea, he

was implicated in planning the Korean Independence movement, and was interned

in a Japanese prison. Under sever conditions in the prison Choi trained in order to

stay fit. In the prison people began to be curious of the small man who could not be

broken. Eventually Choi began teaching the whole prison.

In 1945 Choi was released from prison due to the end of the War. Choi travelled to

Seoul where he organized the Student Soldiers Party. Choi was later commissioned

as a 2nd lieutenant of the new South Korea army which would serve as a “Launching

Pad” for Taekwon-Do. In 1953 he organized the  29th infantry division, at

Cheju Island, which would become the spearhead of Taekwon-Do in the military.

Here Choi developed Taekyon and Karate techniques into the modern day

Taekwon-Do. 1955 served as the beginning of Taekwon-Do as it was formally

recognized in Korea. On April 11, Taekwon-Do was named by a board that was

summoned by General Choi, and in 1966 the International Taekwon-Do Federation

was formed. On June 15, 2002 General Choi Hong Hi passed away.
